The City
Madrid is Spain's capital and most populous city. It is the European Union's second-largest city (EU). Madrid is in the centre of both the nation and the Madrid Community, of which it is also the capital, and is situated on the Manzanares River. Madrid is the political, economic, and cultural capital of Spain, as well as the seat of government and residence of the Spanish monarch. Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid are two world-famous football clubs based in Madrid. Madrid is considered the major financial centre and leading economic hub of the Iberian Peninsula and Southern Europe due to its economic production, high standard of living, and market size. Though Madrid has modern infrastructure, many of its historic neighbourhoods and streets have retained their appearance and feel. The Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace of Madrid, and the Royal Theatre, with its restored 1850 Opera House, are among the city's landmarks. The Prado Museum, the Reina Sofa Museum, a contemporary art museum, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, which complements the other two museums' collections. Cibeles Palace and Fountain has become one of the city's most recognisable monuments. Madrid is best visited in the autumn (September to November) or spring (March to May), when the city comes alive with warm temperatures.
